AI in GEM: navigating challenges and finding opportunities

Overview: With the rise of technologies such as ChatCPT, artificial intelligence (AI) is in more users’ hands than ever before. This has brought new challenges to higher education and GEM and many professionals are concerned about the implications of AI on the field. However, AI technologies also represent many new and timely opportunities for GEM professionals at a time in which we must be more creative and strategic in how we reach, attract, and retain students.

In this SIF participants will discuss common uses of AI in higher education and GEM such as AI enrollment coaching or advising and marketing drip campaigns. We also will discuss changes in student behavior and expectations as a result of the extreme popularity of tools such as ChatGPT, generative AI, and web scrapers.

After considering the challenges posed by AI in higher education and GEM, we will shift our perspective to consider some of the opportunities it represents, such as in outreach and marketing efforts, managing higher caseloads, or developing novel graduate program offerings. Participants will consider strategies for navigating change, discuss how their institutions or teams are successfully responding to challenges, and share tips, best-practices, and success stories for leveraging AI in their work.
